The XawPlus wiget set and applications Version 3.0 May 8th, 2000 Author: Roland Krause * What is XawPlus and what is new ? XawPlus is a clone of the original Xaw library, providing a more up to date look and some extensions to the original Athena widget set. This library is as compatible as possible to the original. It should be possible to compile the source code of an Xaw client without any changes (except the include path of the XawPlus header files) to get the new look of XawPlus to this client. XawPlus makes it possible to use XPM pixmaps, tooltips, a truncate mechanism for too long label strings and UTF8 coded UNICODE labels without changing the code of your application. XawPlus comes with a set of adapted applications using also the new features of XawPlus. If you need further and more up to date informations please visit http://members.aol.com/XawPlus. * What is different to XawPlus 2.1 ? Port to X11R6.4: XawPlus now based completely on the X11R6.4 sources of Xaw. All extensions of XawPlus are merged into these sources. More compatibility to the original: XawPlus is now much more compatible to the original. The implementation for the 3D extensions are moved to the Simple widget. The Add3dExt class is not longer required and was removed. The class tree is now identical to the class tree of Xaw. The definitions of unsupported resources are moved back to the XawPlus header files to make it easier to recompile Xaw clients with XawPlus. The IconList widget is removed: All extensions of the IconList widget are now merged into the code of the List widget. Full UNICODE support for Label based widgets: Label now has full UNICODE support, independent of the locale settings. * How do I build XawPlus and its clients ? To build XawPlus, the GNU compiler set is required. Try version 2.7.x or better. It should be possible to use any other compiler set, but in this case it is required to modify the $CC entry in all makefiles. XawPlus comes with the following archive files: xawplus-3.0.0.tgz The library itself xawplus-3.0-apps.tgz Adapted Applications for XawPlus: bitmap, editres, ghostview, pixmap, xcalc, xcalendar, xe, xed, xfd, xfm, xfontsel, xless, xmag, xman, xminesweep, and xtartool xawplus-3.0-doc.tgz The documentation in HTML In the first step log in as superuser root and put the xawplus archive to /tmp and untar it. Change to the XawPlus directory and type 'make' to compile and install the library. This should work on all linux boxes. For other systems take a look at the makefile. In the next step put the applications archive to /tmp, untar it and compile it using the script ./BuildAll in the applications file tree. * On what machines XawPlus is tested on ? At this time on linux boxes using Intel hardware with X11R6 and partially on an alpha system with ULTRIX.
